    Hey Scott
    re: America, Fuck Yeah: Iran

The scariest thing about Bush is the fact that he is Commander in Chief, and already has nuclear weapons!
Not only him, but Israel also. Many other nations in the nuclear club have leaders with questionable ideals.
We have seen already what Israel are willing to do to its’ enemies, or perceived threats (Lebanon not so long ago).
We as a people are on a precipice of conflict, and the actions of some of the world leaders constantly leave me feeling ill at ease.
Keep up the good work, and illuminate the issues relevant to us all.
    Best wishes

i wonder what the history books will say about our Glorious Nation a couple centuries down the road. guess it depends on who’s writing said books.

hey you asked why none of the presidential candidates were talkin about the retarded-ness (actual word?) of the war… im not 100% sure about obama, clinton, or edwards, but dennis kucinich has indeed been taking against the war, he voted against the patriot act saying it was unconstitutional on the basis of the 14th ammendement’s due process clause’s right to privacy. (supreme court precedents include roe v. wade and griswold v. connecticut before that). hes been against the war since day 1 and hey, hes been reelected every two years since then right?

i dont think he’ll get the nomination on the basis that hes too liberal; any and every issue he takes a stance on, he goes for the total human equality route and when 60% of the country is labeled as ‘moderate’ … well, at least he sticks out and challenges the others….

(in my own personal high school opinion, itll be edwards on the basis that hes a WHITE (not half black), SOUTHERN (thus pulling at least some southern votes away from the GOP, MAN (not a woman)… in that case, im voting for [Michael] Jesus [Archangel]… great name…. (and im a Muslim)

another interesting thought i heard on NPR, do we really want a presidential dynasty? if clinton becomes prez, we will have spent nearly a quarter of a century ruled by 2 families.

    food for thought.

  5. Scott Says:

Wow, very interesting point. Yeah, two families controlling the free world…that’s a scary thought.

  6. Bob Says:

“…two families controlling the free world…?” Are you serious? The US is the free world? Scott, please. I expect better from you. The US is one nation, amongst hundreds in the world. The UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, and Denmark to name just a handful are as free and democratic as the US.

Sure, the US has had the right mix of population, resources, geography and climate, innovation, technological development and federalist style of government providing for local, state and federal jurisdictions, sharing responsibility for services relatively equitably across the country, to have become an economic superpower, but don’t go kidding yourself that the US IS the free world, mate.

It’s only your current economic powerbase which is allowing the US to have the sort of influence it enjoys now.

The US might be the most economically powerful member of the free world, but there are other countries with arguably more democratic and better run governments than the US. The US may be able to influence the rest of the free world, but not control.

    Cheers,

    Bob from Darwin, Australia

  7. Scott Says:

    Bob,

    Settle down my friend. :)

“Control” wasn’t the right choice of wording. I should have said influenced. But, let’s face it, if the US doesn’t control the free world why are there so many nations that followed Bush blindly into the farce known as the Iraq war? That seems like some pretty powerful control to me.

    -S

  8. Bob Says:

    Scott,

Granted buddy, the US does have a great deal of influence, which absolutely borders on control. But the cloth of that influence is made up of multi-woven threads of Faustian fabric between the US and other free world nations.

Part of the pact with the devil Australia made with the US in relation to Iraq has to do with economic ties, and free trade deals we’re signed up to. Other parts revolve around intelligence sharing arrangements we’re party to (Google ECHELON - as one example to see what I mean).

And lastly, as Oz is a democratic, western thinking, english speaking, and relatively prosperous nation at the bottom of the world, with our own “patch” in the South Pacific, and Indian Oceans, and very close to some of the world’s trouble spots, keeping in good with the Yanks has been Australian Government policy ever since the Japanese drew the US out of it’s policy of non-interventionism in 1942 by bombing Pearl Harbor.

Iraq has been a basket case since well before Saddam butchered his way to power. It has been a mess since the end of WWI when it was “carved” out of the Ottoman Empire by the Brits and the French. Yep, the same guys you blokes had to deal with in your history - think about it, bloody Imperialism, and largely the creation of your non-intervention stance from George Washington onwards…

Anyhoo, overthrowing one Iraqi despot has led to the spawning of dozens of others, each with his own particular agenda - so the challenge in Iraq has become herding cats, only these felines use their nine lives to explode car bombs and roadside IED’s in a multi-dimensional chess game, where targets and allegiances change from day to day, but the common foe are the Christian soldiers fighting for peace (which reminds me of an old saying: “Fighting for peace is as pointless as fucking for virginity.”)

I don’t know what the solution is, staying on is not good, pulling out is not good. But which is worse? We can’t change the past, the only thing we can change is the future.

    Cheers,

    Bob
