Carson Daly Heads Back to Work
‘Last Call with Carson Daly’ will go back on the air on Monday. But how? The writer’s strike is still going on, so how can he do that? Daly claims that “roughly 75 staff and crew would have lost their jobs” otherwise. He also feels like he has shown his support – “As a non-WGA member I feel I have supported my four Guild writers and their strike by suspending production for a month,” he said. “While I continue to support their cause, I can’t, in all good conscience, stand by and let that happen to the vast majority of my loyal staff and crew.”
So what do you think? Should the strike continue as writers fight for payment on work that is distributed online or is it time to start saving some jobs?
I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t fully understand this union stuff. I have never been part of one and I have never worked in ‘big media.’ I am all for writers being compensated, but at the expense of actors, crew, tech, catering, admin, electricians, carpenters, and on and on – NO. Every person that works in television has mouths to feed and bills to pay. Sure, Letterman isn’t going to file for unemployment anytime soon, but the gaffer on his show might. Should the pay raises of a few dictate the financial web-being of the majority?

OH MY GOD
Carson Daly has a show?!? Huh…one more thing not to record. I think he’s the human equivalent of water chestnuts anyway, so what he does or doesn’t do, I think, has absolutely zero effect on the big picture. On the subject of those writers, they’d better be careful because there’s always someone waiting in the wings, especially writers, to sell an idea they can. I’ve always thought labor unions are a silly thing that do more harm than good, but they are super volatile when you partner those with ANY creative venture.
