I was shocked to learn of the passing of Kevin DuBrow of Quiet Riot. I had heard he stayed away from alcohol and drugs and lived a pretty healthy lifestyle. At 52 years old you wonder what it could be that he died from. In his honor, we open the show with my fave QR song.

We also talk about 2Girls1Cup. I’m warning you right now to stay away from it. Seriously. Don’t go there. Ever.

Hey Scott, another great show. Really though I really have to know where you got that Patriots thing? Is it an MP3 or a video? Can you link me up with a copy, or tell me where I can find it?

I know some people that really need to hear/see it

Thanks again, keep up the good work!

  2. Jim Says:

    scott,

the fact that you’re even MENTIONING the 2 girls 1 cup is encouraging people to go watch it. however, a quick google search gave me enough of an idea what it’s all about that i will be staying as far away from that as possible.

    keep up the great shows!

    Hey Scott

Cool show – in undergrad psych classes across the globe (I’m guessing) the tale of Phineas Gage is taught. A man who was a railway worker, and in an unfortunate accident got a metal pole through his head in a disturbingly similar way to this boy.
In the same way this missed any vital parts of his brain that might have killed him, but lead to massive changes in his personality due damage in the frontal lobe (home of self control, executive function etc) of the brain.
Gage, who was a generally ok guy beforehand, became intemperate (to put it mildly), couldn’t hold down a job anymore etc etc. The famous quote from friends and family is that ‘Gage was no longer Gage’.

I wonder if this boy will have the same problems?

    Hey Scott,

I have to admit I was very tempted to watch 2girls1cup. I looked for it on youtube, but did not have a chance to watch it. After reading Jim’s post I looked it up on google too. I read a few site descriptions, and figured out what the video is about, I am glad that I did not watch it.

Glad I missed that one, makes me wonder if I can get my wife to watch it for me. :^)

    Have a great week.

    Hey Scott,

Yeah 2 girls 1 cup yeah what the hell is that all about? I mean what’s it’s purpose? I did a Google search to and why would any one want to watch that?Just gross! By the way I knew since 2003 that the rest of the world has a negative view on the US. I have in-laws from there and lets say I heard of some really stupid stuff that Americans try do on vacation do in the summer in Canada. Example, ski. The temps range from 80 to 100 degrees depending where you are and the cities are always hotter. Here is a story that might be funny. A friend of the family was walking downtown Owen Sound ON (That is 2 1/2 hours north of Toronto) it is in the middle of July and a car with snow skies on top asked our friend for directions to the ski slope. He told them how to get there and they were on their way. Mind you it was 90 degrees F and the middle of summer. That is a classic in my book. From other sources I have been told American’s think it is cold up there all year.

Love the show keep them coming

  6. Scott Says:

    Christina,

I don’t think Americans are stupid (some are), just ignorant. Not understanding that Canada isn’t always cold doesn’t make someone a bad person, just unfamiliar with weather patterns in Canada. You can find that sort of stupidity anywheer in the world – it’s not exclusive to Americans.

    Hey Scott,

Curiosity got me. 2girls1cup. Everyone don’t go there!

  9. Scott Says:

Simon – If you want the Patriots clip, send along the show – that’s the easiest way to do it my friend.

  10. Simon Walsh Says:

Will do chief, I didn’t know if that was the full clip or not.

  11. Scott Says:

Simon – it is indeed the full clip. You get it all! :)

  12. christina Says:

    Scott,

If I implied that they were a bad people for not knowing the weather pattern than i apologize. All I am saying that if you go to another country spend at least 2 weeks studying up on that country. So you don’t look stupid to the natives because that was not the first time that happens and I am sure it’s not the last either.

  13. Jacci Says:

I felt that your comments about Americans, especially about those that live in the ‘backwoods”, was very offensive.

I live in rural South Dakota—miles away from a Starbucks or even a Target or a Macy’s. I don’t have Gucci or Prada in my closet, but I do have a college degree hanging on my wall. I work in technically advanced industry, I try to understand other people’s views, I don’t carry hate in my heart and most of all I am proud to be an American.

Now don’t think that I question your pride to be an American (because I do feel that a lot of the comments that you make are very valid) or that I ignored your foresight to receive multiple emails and comments from those that live in bum-fuck America. What I’m saying is that you shouldn’t make such broad stokes when talking about the melting pot that is America. Because we are not all gun-toting hicks that want to blow everything up – which I don’t think is the root of the problem anyway. I feel that the real problem in America is that we are always looking for someone to blame – no matter the issue.

If anyone wants a true glimpse of who/what Americans are, drive through South Dakota. Everyone owns a gun, but there a less gun related violent crimes per state capita than any large city. The state is largely Republican, but everyone will open their hearts and minds to you while you visit our state.

  14. Scott Says:

    Jacci,

Thanks for taking the time to comment.

I grew up in New Hampshire, which is often the butt of “backwoods” jokes. So first off, I get what it’s like to live in a state that is considered by most in the country to be rural.

I certainly don’t believe that all of rural America are “gun-toting hicks,” but the reality is that most of the conservative-right lives in such parts. I am not a fan of gun ownership. If you hunt, that’s fine, but why does anyone need to carry a handgun or a semi-automatic weapon? That is surely not what our founding fathers intended.

I agree with you about the blame issue. We never look internally and say “my bad, we fucked up.” That is why the world has a grudge against us right now, and rightfully so.

My point in that segment was not to bash rural America, it was more to point out that a visit to SF does not give one an understanding of what America is truly like. For better or worse, it does not.

So I will recommend your advice to those traveling from abroad – take a trip to South Dakota and get a sense of Jacci’s America. Maybe I’ll take you up on that as well some day.

  15. Matt Says:

    Scott,

I do have to call you off-base on the backwoods = America comment, but not for the reason you’d think. The thing to remember is, America has a different topography than the one on the map. One in every 37 Americans lives in New York City. The average American lives in an urban area, and has since—I believe—the mid-1920s. The armed, ignorant, Bible-thumping backwoods male Republican is nothing but a loud, over-represented minority.

You can see in a visualization I’ve been working on:

    http://www.spacetoast.net/STP/film/population

America’s coasts (including those of the Great Lakes) are our highlands, population-wise, while the middle of the county is an enormous, empty basin.

(And it’s not sour grapes: I was born, raised, and spent last weekend stacking firewood in Union, Maine. Population 2,209.)

  16. Scott Says:

Matt – love the visualizations. That is very cool. Indeed you are right. Wow though, I didn’t realize 1 in 37 Americans lives in NYC…that’s a pretty crazy stat.
