Giuliani: A Man of the People?

Rudy G. earned his everyman reputation in the wake of 9/11 – rightfully so, he did a great job holding that city, and our country, together in the immediate aftermath. We are now almost six years past that, yet he still seems to be a one-trick pony. His whole platform seems to center on the war on terror and “we can no longer play defense blah blah blah…” I personally think that the country has had enough of the “my dick is bigger than your dick” type of leadership, but I respected him for having his own views, despite opposition from his party.

Today I ran across this article. Apparently Rudy’s people setup a campaign stop in Iowa to grandstand on a family farm. After the owners of the farm made elaborate plans and rallied the town around them, Giuliani’s people inquired about the couple’s net worth. When it turned out that they weren’t worth at least a million dollars, the campaign canceled the stop. When asked to comment the campaign could only muster:

“We’re glad to have Debby and Jerry’s support and are thankful for all their hard work on the campaign. We’re looking forward to our visit to Iowa on Friday and having the opportunity to share Mayor Giuliani’s message of fiscal discipline.”

Are you kidding me? These knuckleheads don’t even realize that the reason they were asked to comment on this story was to respond to the allegations of elitism. Instead, Maria Comella, Giuliani’s spokesperson, took the opportunity to try and shove a talking point down the nation’s throat.

I realize in the age of You Tube and camera phones, it is impossible for a candidate to be “on” 100% of the time and never make mistakes. This wasn’t one of those cases of error. Rudy didn’t flub a statistic or misquote someone. His camp asked for the help of a supporter and then thumbed their nose at them when their net worth didn’t top a million bucks. That doesn’t play out well for a man of the people.

Shame on you Rudy.

I wish this story suprised me. Don’t get me wrong it is a terrible story, but how sad is the state of our leadership when a story this disgusting doesn’t even really compare to the 10 million other stories that are out there about the people who want to lead out country. Honestly, he has an entire history of this way of thinking and actually uses legislation to act it out. The media keeps saying he rides the fence on issues and this seems to be true. However his policies all fall under the umbrella of elitism. For instance, he is against abortion one day for it the next etc. Well, he actually passed legislation in NYC while mayor that not only made it ok for abortions, but actually took tax dollars to fund them. Later it was revealed that his reasoning was that it would help the welfare system because “these people are going to get the money somehow at least it will be a one time pay out this way.” ummmm… yuck! Is he really for the right to chose?

Giuliani is republican right? I mean you shouldn’t be so shocked. To bad he didn’t campaign on one of those super cattle farms, you know the one that all you see is cattle for miles. Wait then he is for big money, that is a bad message to send. Also, snubbing average joes isn’t cool either or is it.
