The Quest for More Content
EDITED & UPDATED 10/6: I get emails from lots of you each week asking for more content. Often you ask for a daily show or a longer episode. You may have heard #64 where I asked if you guys would be willing to pay $5 a month for some extra content. Many of you have written in and said ‘yes.’ Here is another twist – what if I created sort of an exclusive ‘club’ for premiere members? For $60 a year you would get exclusive daily shows (shorter than usual – maybe 5-10 minutes long), some video projects I am working on and a limited edition American Cliche t-shirt or other piece of merchandise. There could be giveaways for club members each week. I have also been thinking about access to a members-only forum where you’d hear about things on the show and in my life before the general population. What do you think? Would you pay for that kind of extra schwag? For those that don’t want to pay for $60 upfront, we could do $5 per month. Send me an email and let me know.
Also, for those that do want more content from me. Now. For free. Have you checked out my music show called 8BallRadio Rewind? I try to do it weekly (although I don’t usually succeed). If you dig the songs I play at the end of AC, then you’ll probably dig the Rewind. Go over and check it out.

I would do it, however I don’t know how the payment procedure would be. Paypal?? does it work international?

Good question. I think Paypal is international. If not, I could even do it by check. We’d figure something out as there are about 40% of the audience for the show is from outside the U.S.

I’m listening to the show for the first time…I’m loving it, I’ll pay it but I’m in Mexico and I don’t think paypal is International, I’ve tried using it before.
Aaanyways, awesome show!

I want to be clear that the existing American Cliche show that comes out each Tuesday would remain the same. It would be free to all that wanted it. This “club” idea would be for people that want more content and merchandise other that the free show.
I am actually really excited about the idea. Hopefully you guys understand that the reason I would need to charge is not so that I can get rich, but more to cover the costs of the T-shirts and the time to produce the extra content. Anyway, keep the emails and the comments coming!

i think i would probably pay for it, however would it ONLY be about your life or would it still be about the news topics and things that piss you off, you know that i’m saying?
Also, this is just a thought, but if you’re doing $5.00 month, what’s the incentive to pay for it all up front if it costs the same. You know how Sirius and alot of other things do a free month if you pay for the service in advance. You might be able to rake in more up front money to cover your costs or merchandise by offering some sort of discount (a free month of shows) by paying for a full year. That’s just a thought you may want to consider though.

The show would be a mini version of the weekly show now….not so much about my personal life everyday cause that would get old…but maybe a funny story that happened to me that day and a bizarre news story and my comments….so a 5-10 version of the regular show?
Also I still need to finalize the plan and cost and such, but the benefit of signing up for a year vs. per month would be that you’d get a t-shirt. If you did $5 a month you’d just be paying for the extra content. The people that pay $60 a year would get a new exclusive t-shirt or some other merch every year….make sense?
Good idea? Bad Idea?

I could do $5 a month, but $60 up front is a lot to ask of a collage kid for a podcast. If I was rolling in money I would do it no problem. Also for the pay members or club service will the show still be published with an rss feed? If there are no rss feeds it is almost worthless since I will never manually download the show.

I agree Rian, $60 upfront is a significant chunk of change. The only reason to pay upfront would be to get a t-shirt. If I sent everyone a t-shirt that paid $5 a month, you could cancel after you got the shirt and I would lose a bunch of money. The year-long membership just gives me more of an understanding of how many t-shirts I should have made.
The bonus content would most-likely get their own rss feed. It will be different from the regular rss and I’m not sure how I’d manage it yet.

i’m all for this. a half hour a week is simply not enough to distract me from work i should be doing.

I just wanted to say I love the show and I think it’s great!! Right now now $60 dolloars a year is expensive for me right now; you know a poor college student. I was wondering is there anyway that we can just buy the t-shirt? I would be all over that.

We’d have to figure out the shirt thing. I was thinking that part of the coolnees factor of havinga “club” would be to get exclusive goodies. Maybe we could work something out…I’ll have to see what we can come up with.
Ok, so now that a bunch of you appear to be onboard, we need to think up a name for this little “club.” What are your suggestions? What should it be called?

here’s a Q, i only listen to the show through the emails that i get with the “click here to listen now” link, so if we sign up for AmeriCASTica, would i be able to listen to the show through those emails? that would rock my metaphorical socks.

Scott, $60/yr is a bit steep for me but if the price was a bit lower I would be part. It would be cool if it was monthly instead of yearly too. Also PayPal is a must and it is international in most countries.
