I’m not gonna lie, I had some technical difficulties getting this show done. As you know, I have done every show for the last six months or so “live to tape.” That means once I start taping, there are no re-do’s or edits. This week, the processor on my PowerBook froze twice on me during the show leaving me to do a bit of post-show editing. For the trainwreck it could have been, this was a small price to pay…I could have lost everything and had to re-do! Anyway, if you’re like me, you’re struggling to get back into the swing of things after a holiday weekend…or, maybe your just getting pumped for the upcoming World Cup in Germany.
The Details:

I agree with you Scott. Some places are not appropriate for children. Jason and I have 2 and we like to think they are even well behaved, but even still, we appreciate that a place for fine dining is not meant for children. If there is no kids menu or booster seats….probably not the place for Jr. I don’t know how many times we’ve been somewhere even paying less, the atmosphere is set up for ADULTS, but here comes THAT family, probably the same one. (They probably travel America and see just how many of these restaurants they can sabotage).
There are many problems with this situation, first being, the parents…why not just tell your children to sit down, be quiet and use their manners if you choose to bring them there? Is this such a bad thing to do nowadays…I know that we lay the groundwork before we even get out of the car, whether it be a restaurant, Target or Staples….Kids, here’s how you act here. K…here’s the second problem I see, everyone is scared that they’ll be hit with a lawsuit in this day and age. Don’t tell the family their kids are too loud or don’t tell them its not a place for children…DISCRIMINATION LAWSUIT!! I’m sure it’s much easier to comp a few meals for the unpleased folks than it is to pay $150.00 and hour to a lawyer and then to lose the lawsuit and pay the HUGE settlement. I mean seriously, you know you can win that…remember the coffee burning incident at McDonalds…it’s America, you don’t have to be right to win.
To comment on the DaVinci Code, here is why I think it’s an issue. Most organized religions tell you “this is how it is, this is how it was and this is how it is going to be…live by it”. If there is ever anything that will let anyone question those ideals, it’s bad. Nevermind the fact it’s fiction, but it puts ideas out there that everything they’ve been teaching might not be true. People that question faith are generally looked down on in the churches I’ve been a part of. You are just supposed to take the information given by church officials and the Bible and not question it.

The other thing I noticed about this particular family is you can tell they do this sort of thing all the time. The kids clearly go to these sort of places all the time and it didn’t phase them. I’m sure the parents didn’t even give a second thought to the rest of us and the amount of money we were spending on our evening out.
Oh well, we made the best of it and had a good time.

I couldn’t agree more with Scott and Melissa R
I have two kids and I would never consider taking them into a restaurant like that. If I were in a pinch and had absolutely no choice they would be on their best behavior and certainly not watching DVD’s, etc. If for some reason they could not pull it off then we would all be eating take out in the hotel or at home. I don’t know what it is with people today, but they seem to lack basic parenting skills and common sense. I can completely understand reaching your wits end, but why do people rely so much on these portable DVD players when out and about and in the car (driving only a couple miles)?? Thanks Scott and Melissa, now I want to go on a rant about people and their parenting styles.
I will stop now.
As for the DaVinci Code, I think the church’s response to the book and now movie just give the theories more support. If it is just a fictional tale then leave it at that. There are tons of movies out there dealing with the church, religion, etc and they all just seem to fly under the radar. Why don’t they get the same attention? BTW Melissa, I have to agree with your statements on the questioning of faith as well. I have always seen that. If you pose the slightest question you are labeled a freak and are damned.
Great show as usual! I have only been listening for a month or so and look forward to each new episode! Keep up the good work!!

I agree, my wife and I always called ourselves “kid magnets.” We sometimes go to a nice restaurant maybe not as expensive as 200 bucks a pop, but still sushi can get pretty expensive. It is nice to go and have sushi, and a nice bottle of imported beer. There is nothing worse than kids being sit right next to me who cannot sit still! Drives me crazy. Anyway, I think there are places that are appropriate (Chuckie cheeze) that are very kid friendly for kids to have dinner and enjoy themselves.

Hey
I was listening to the clip of Kai [Hope i spelt it right] And the England team for this world cup will probably fail. But, i say this because the TV is full of crap for “Support england”! I saw one car with four England flags on! I mean, whats the point? One little flag does not support your team, it just gives the industry more money, and when we lose real early, they will be so pissed at being ripped off!

Hey!
Today I listend to your show the first time and I think it is really amazing!
But I have to say something to the Fifa WM in Germany: It is annoying! Everywhere advertisment, fan articles and even songs. You can’t do anything without being reminded that it is WM. It’s terrible!
Greetings from Germany

I am still really surprised that the restaurant allowed them to behave how they did. Do you think that having this dining experience would deter you from going there again? I was just wondering because you mentioned that this hasn’t happened there before—I guess it may depend on the degree of irritance.
I would forward to next week!

Fuck them kids. Maybe the parents need an ass whoopin. I just can’t understand parents who let the tv raise their kids.

It all comes down to money, those kids must have run up a big bill

I would have to disagree with Daniel’s accusation, inevitably kids in today’s society disrespects filial piety.

I know this has nothing to do with your current show, but I’m furious right now. I’m reading on CNN.com about why gays can’t get married yet again, and AGAIN i’m confused. If this country is founded on the bible and Christianity, then why has prayer been taken out of the schools, why can’t we say God Bless You without offending someone, why can’t be have the 10 commandments displayed in public? I just can’t fathom how we can be such hippocrites on this. Don’t quote scripture to me about Jesus says marriage is One Man and One Woman and then take the Pledge of Alligence out of my childrens school because it says One Nation Under God…
I think we are living in 2006 where men and men and women and women should be able to like happily (and unhappily) just like the men and women that are currently getting married for the wrong reasons. Lets put the smack down on the adulterers in the world, where are the bible pushers quoting scriptures on them in front of the city county buildings, i gurantee there are more men and women waltzing into the marriage lines who are not following the word of God and no one is saying shit about it.
What is the problem with letting people be happy? There are so many laws in this and other countries that keep us from doing things, give people the right to love one another and marry. Not everyone believes in the same God this country was founded on. Hell, is God even allowed in this country without written permission…
June 5th, 2006 at 8:12 am
Melissa,
Don’t even get me started on this whole Amendment stuff. Wasn’t Bush’s whole campaign platform that government should be smaller and not interfere in individual state issues? I guess that when the states don’t do what he wants them to do, this is the next step.
I will talk about this more on this week’s show.

I honestly can’t believe you would want to bring up this subject again…it’s pretty simple, gay people will be gay and thats that. No one should have control over their life is the way I see it, so Scott, please spare the 5min of talking about gays on the next show please =) As for “One Nation Under God,” the kids that don’t want to say…simply don’t have to…so lets try and not make this a huuge deal. Shouldnt affect you right? ....erg, unless your gay…anyways I LOVE your show Scott, your doing a great job with it. Pc**

Joe,
That’s the problem with the world – people think if it doesn’t affect them directly then they shouldn’t bother discussing or debating it. I think if we gave a shit more about each other and the issues that we face then we’d all be better off.
Oh, and it’s only 5 minutes…I have it to spare.

SOOOOOO…..based on that logic….only gay people should be able to make decisions about gay topics? or only gay people should be able to talk about gay topics? I don’t understand.
Maybe the war shouldn’t should affect us, if we aren’t actually over there fighting it, i guess we can’t have an opinion about it. Or maybe huge topics like racism shouldn’t affect us unless we’re a direct victim of it….again…i don’t understand where you are coming from Joe….
Kids don’t have a choice about saying the Pledge anymore, its been BANNED in most states. Hell, in most schools you can’t even say a prayer at graduation. I’m surprised they haven’t taken “in god we trust” off of our money yet…i’m sure its been talked about.
June 5th, 2006 at 1:29 pm
The whole gay subject is frustratuing to me. I am not gay at all, nor are ANY of my friends or family members, but I’m from Canada where gay marriage was just made legal by our government a couple years ago. Let me note that our then Prime Minister was roughly 67 years old at the time, an old fashioned man as I could see, and even he could see past the fact that 2 people in love are gay, and that they deserve the right to be happy and engage in marriage. So what is wrong with that? I don’t know, but ask our new Prime Minister Stephen Harper who is probably about 45 (my guess), who wants to over-turn the new ruling. I vote for leaving the gay community alone on the marriage issue. Let them marry, let them be happy, they are people just like the rest of us, with a heart, a brain and life.
Scott, I’m a new listener, just stumbled across your show at work the other day. I’m hooked already, keep up the good work pal!
Cheers, from Canada…

Scott,
Just heard your show for the first time on iTunes. I’ll be adding it to my podcast list. Thanks!
I fully agree with you about kids in public. Parents are responsible and need to know it before they drop their drawers. Sometimes we all need reminders though and the restaurant should have stepped up and discreetly asked them to get it under control. Parenting and service are both slipping badly these days.
On the other hand, did you say something to the restaurant? From your description it certainly sounds like the kind of place that isn’t appropriate for kids, but if you didn’t say something to them, how are they going to know that your experience was negative? Now they can’t do anything about it.
Looking forward to hearing some more interesting news and rants. Thanks.
Salude dude!

Ok basically discussing and debating that whole gay topic IS a waste of time if it doesnt directly affect you. I mean, gays are normal people just like you and me, so who cares what they do right? I feel its only embarassing them more…well I wouldnt call it embarassing if they are comfortable with their sexuality, but lets just say bringing more attention to them than needed. And Scott, sometimes giving a shit about each other…especially people we dont even know personally…cause alot more problems..but hey, we all have our opinions right? and I respect everything you say. Just a friendly discussion right? =) Pc**

June 5th, 2006 at 8:51 pm
Joe,
It’s not a waste of time for me. I have lots of friends in my life that are gay and if it affects their life, then it affects me. We all want the people we care about to be happy and have the same freedoms that you and I have, right? For me this ISN’T a waste of time. If we don’t take a stand, where does it stop? Look back to the civil rights movement and segragation…if those brave people didn’t take a stand where would be in terms of race in this country? Granted, we have a long way to go, but would you say that I shouldn’t care about racial equality because I’m white?
I do appreciate your comments and I’m glad that you take the time to post your opinion so we can have a discussion. Thanks to all of you for posting your thoughts.

Scott,
I agree with you on the issue of kids in a restaurant, the kids don’t bother me as much as seeing the parents not taking care of them. Ok I don’t have children, and taking care of a little brother is not the same, but when I with him, I try to take him to places he will like (some place where he can have fun, without bothering other people while we eat) . My husband and I choose not to have children and I don’t think that it’s a requirement for married couples to have them, but sometimes people make you feel like
hey if you don’t have kids you don’t know what it’s like, ok i get that, but I know about good maners and beeing polite, my parents taught me that. Some parents said “they are children” as an excuse, but they are their children, not mine, so I don’t whant them around my table running, specially when we are paying more then 25 dlls. for a meal. If I pay anything less for a meal I know I will have to deal with kids crying or shouting, but I know, I expected, so there’s no problem. But if you are in a nice restaurant, and you paying for it, you deserve to have your nice dinner. Thanks

that’s the problem joe…..PEOPLE SHOULDN’T CARE, like the President and other leaders of countries…but they do! Here lies the problem to begin with. If we don’t care about other people’s issues, then we will be somewhat naive to what’s really going on in the world we live in. Gay people are normal people who are attracted to the same sex, why does there have to be laws prohibiting them from certain things. Its pretty much the same things as when black people and women couldn’t vote because of who they were.
When enough people care about something and do something about it, shit changes, just look at our history. It doesn’t happy overnight, by any means, but without good ol Abe ( a white man at that ) how long might have slavery been going on? What if he just turned around and said, “i shouldn’t worry about it because i’m white and it doesn’t directly affect me” Seriously…. you might want to open your mind to the idea that talking about issues surrounding gay/lesbians by straight people, isn’t a bad thing. It’s PEOPLE standing up for other PEOPLE’S rights that they should be given. That is why America was founded on…not people turning their backs on others…just for sake of not talking about it. It’s 2006 we talk about everything.
June 6th, 2006 at 6:36 pm
Well I think im out-debated…I think we all need to listen to John Cougar Mellancamps song “Peaceful World” and enjoy the lyrics….Scott maybe you could play that as your closing song for the next show? Thatd be cool if you did…thanks for the discussion guys
Cant wait till the next episode comes out!!

If you think the Family Law court is fair, you have never had the experiences of a man in the system. Local Family law courts deal with divorces and is so gender biased. Most of the people in that system operate as if nobody is watching. How about spending some time interviewing men who have been churned and burned.
September 21st, 2006 at 3:16 pm
Did I miss something in this thread? Who said anything about family law court being fair or unfair? Granted, I realize it’s been like 4 months since I recorded this show, but I don’t recal saying anything about family law in relation to this…. hmmm
