Two Big Gripes
Overall I’m having a pretty great week. The HBO campaign seems to be going well. I’ve received a few dozen emails from you guys congratulating me on the deal. I do appreciate the words of encouragement.
Today, two minor things irked me (and it’s only 11:20 in the morning in CA). First, I just learned that my favorite new TV show “Love Monkey” has been put on indefinite hiatus (read: cancelled). Seriously? This was the highlight of an otherwise pathetic season of new TV shows across the major networks. What kind of world do we live in where a shitty show like “The Bachelor” can have a gazillion shitty seasons of the same regurgitated shit, but a fresh show like Love Monkey is cancelled after three episodes? The networks wonder why their ratings are in trouble…how about this – you pound us over the head with promos asking us to tune into a show. Then, when we do, you yank it off the air after three episodes. How about we give a show time to grow and find it’s audience? Let some word of mouth spread. Everything in our world is instant gratification. If something doesn’t sell well right out of the gate, then we scrap it and move on to the next shitty idea.
The other thing that chapped my ass today was Apple’s press event. As many of you know, I am a die-hard Apple/Mac guy. In the last five years I’ve owned four Mac computers, five iPods, and countless Apple accessories. You got me Jobs – I drank the Kool Aid. However, this press event today was laughable. Your big announcement? A “new” Mac Mini that’s $100 more expensive and a little faster. Where are the PVR capabilities? Where is the integrated iPod dock? And this new iPod Hi-Fi? A boombox? Really? Boomboxes were what I used to have in the 80’s when I was 12. To suggest that we’re going to toss out our home stereos and plop down $350 for a boombox is utterly ridiculous. After those lame announcements I thought surely there will be “one more thing.” Nope. Nada.
Again, I realize these are small things, but they irk me. My message to both CBS and Apple is essentially the same – if you want my patronage to your companies, then give me some products worth consuming instead of the crap that you seem to be churning out lately. Specifically to CBS - no wonder my audience is growing by leaps and bounds for this show. People are tired of being force-fed the same big media bullshit. Oh, Love Monkey didn’t work out? Let’s develop another crime/law/medical drama!
I’m over it kids!
